I took Ernie to the vet yesterday for an oil change and after he was done yowling in agony I shuttled him to my parents’ house. For the next 7 weeks he’s on vacation–all those windows to look out of, that chipmunk to stalk, he’ll even get some time out on the deck to lay in the sun and breathe free.

I drove home to my empty apartment and that’s when it hit me–in a couple of days I’m going back to Vegas. In a couple of days I’ll be back in the Amazon Room, squatting behind my laptop, floating above the pool of insanity that is the World Series of Poker. Time to get my head in the game.

Before every long trip I’ve taken lately I feel a sense of disorientation. Here I am in my apartment, all by myself, enjoying the breeze coming through the window and listenting to the birds. A week from now I’ll be 3,000 miles away in a gigantic room with 3,000 other people. It’s seems so bizarre that my mind can’t quite believe it. But once I’m there it’ll seem perfectly normal and routine.

I’m making my packing lists, hoping to travel a bit lighter this time around. Last year I took a picture of all the clothes I didn’t wear once while I was out there and they could’ve filled a carry-on all by themselves. I’m gone for nearly 2 months so I’ll cut myself some slack if I bring a few superfluous items, but I don’t wanna carry around an extra 10 pounds of crap if I don’t have to.

I know to bring more long-sleeved button-down shirts this year, because even when it’s 115 outside the Amazon Room can be a bit chilly. I know to pack a hooded sweatshirt in my kickin’ new laptop bag because when the Amazon Room isn’t chilly, it’s freaking COLD. I bought a WSOP hoodie last year during the final table because I was so cold at 2AM that I couldn’t stand it. If you’re covering Day 2 of an event and they play into the wee hours it pays to stay warm, especially so you don’t come down with the inevitable World Series head cold. To that end I’m bringing a wide array of drugs so I don’t have a night like I did covering the $5K Omaha Hi-Lo event, where I was sneezing and coughing and utterly miserable and they played until 3 in the morning. Not this time around, no way.

Most of my laundry is done, just need to iron a few things (note to self–do I need to bring a travel iron?) and review my lists. Gotta be sure to bring all my cables and battery chargers. Don’t wanna forget my glasses. Swim trunks, our place has a pool.

Pretty much ready to go now. Could be locked and loaded in a few hours. Wanna get to Vegas, get settled, let my body and brain acclimatize to the heat and the time difference and get to work. And then a week from now I’ll probably be missing home.

When do you get in? I fly in Tuesday the 27th around 6pm – looking forward to seeing you again!

Don’t bother with the travel iron. Your hotel will have one they will let you use.
