How The Times Have Changed

Jason Kottke posted a CBS News report from 1975 showing an attempted relief flight out of Da Nang airport in the late stages of the war. The idea was to fly out women and children before the North Vietnamese arrived–instead the plane was mobbed by South Vietnamese soldiers trying to escape. Terrifying chaos ensued. I think saying that I recognized the airport and surrounding country would be projecting, as the CBS crew wasn’t able to get many shots from outside the plane. Still, watching the video gave me a serious chill, and not from Dan Rather’s sideburns.

Da Nang airport today? Very nice. Clean. Air conditioned terminals. Vietnam Airlines? Modern, efficient, excellent service (the tongue sandwich we were served on one flight notwithstanding). Watching this video, having been in Da Nang just a few weeks ago, was very strange.
