Almost Home

I’m sitting in the main corridor of the Philly airport, sucking up power for the laptop and waiting out the hour till we board our flight to Pittsburgh. Our flight from Taipei was late taking off and when we finally arrived in LA we only had an hour to catch our connection to Charlotte. I learned a new four-letter word during this trip–"LAX". And while I know that only has three letters I’m sure anyone who’s flown through that dump knows what I’m talking about. Though the folks from EVA (the airline we flew to Vietnam) did a great job getting us hotel rooms and seats on our early AM flight to Philly.

It took nearly two hours to get to the hotel, check in, and eat, and I thought about just staying up a few hours more and then collapsing on the plane. I watched The Departed on HBO and stayed up till around 2AM before my body gave out. I slept for a couple of hours, my slumber interrupted by a woman in a nearby room who was sobbing uncontrollably. After I showered and dressed and headed for the door I could still hear her.

It was in Taipei that I got a bit of very good and very unexpected news–I was in the running to win Pauly’s NCAA pool. I thought my brackets were busted after the first round and then I didn’t really keep up with the results while I was in Vietnam. I knew who won, but I couldn’t remember who I’d picked. I knew I had Kansas winning it all and sitting in the airport in Taipei I learned that if Kansas won I’d take it down. I guess I was about seven miles above the Pacific Ocean when Mario Chalmers hit that incredible game-tying three to send the game into overtime, which Kansas dominated. What a world, making money while riding in business class on an Asian airline. Ship it!

Once I get home I’ll be able to post more pictures and stories. I’ll also be able to get long, hot shower and get some cold medicine in me. And I’m gonna savor sitting at home, my home, and enjoy the peace and quiet.
