Viva Las Vegas!; or, I Shoulda Picked Option Two

Late last night I went out to my car to brush away the snow and scrape the windshield. I walked back to my flat and thought, in just 18 hours or so I’ll be in Central America. I stared up into the darkness and marveled at the wonder of it all.

I woke up early, missed rush hour traffic, and arrived at the airport with time enough to spare to snag breakfast. I check in…and my itinerary looks a bit odd. Instead of flying to Charlotte, and then to CR, it says that I’m flying to VEGAS. Wait, did it pull my confirmation from my trip last month?

No. US Airways, in its infinite wisdom, delayed my flight to Charlotte until noon. Meaning I’d miss my connection to CR. So the computers rescheduled me for the best route to my final destination. Pittsburgh to Vegas. Vegas to Phoenix. Phoenix to CR. “You gotta be shitting me,” I said.

The US Airways rep who assisted me was very helpful and sympathetic and I wanted to punch her in the throat. She said that I could go to ticketing to see if they had a better way of getting me down there, but the flight to Vegas departed 45 minutes earlier than my Charlotte flight was supposed to (good thing I was early) and she said that usually the system picked the best option if a flight was cancelled. With not much time to spare I printed my boarding passes (three of them!) and headed for the security checkpoint. Fortunately that was pretty light and I raced to my gate in time to send a quick email to my bosses letting them know not to pick me up at the airport at 2:30PM. Try, 8:45PM.

Awesome. A four-hour flight to Vegas, an hour and change to Phoenix, and then five-plus to Costa Rica. Like, shit. I’m sitting in McCarran now and I’m so ticked I don’t even want to play video poker (even though the machines are calling to me…).

Oh, hell. The worst airline snafu I’ve had to deal with was sitting on the tarmac at LaGuardia for 90 minutes when I came back from Aruba. Big whoop. Got my headphones, got my iPod, I’ll make it thru to Phoenix and grab a bite before the jaunt to CR. It’s 30 degrees and windy in Vegas today. Feels very odd not to be headed to the Strip right now.

At least this give me an idea of what I’ll endure when I fly to Vietnam. We’re going to Charlotte, then to LA, then comes the 14-hour jaunt to Taipei. With a flight to Saigon to follow THAT. I guess in comparison this little sojourn ain’t that big a deal.

Oh, and to the gentleman behind me who removed his hard-case carry-on trunk and rested it on my head as he fetched his jacket, be thankful that I’ve cranked my patience-drip to the maximum. Because otherwise, brother, you and I were gonna go.
