The Beautiful Game

I’m watching it right now, as Brazil takes the United States out behind the woodshed for an old-fashioned whoopin’. I know we’re down a player (actually, I missed the first half, so I’m taking J.P. Dellacamera’s word for it) but Brazil looks slick and predatory and, well, Brazilian, while our players looked beaten at the 55 minute mark, when the score was just 2-0.

There’s been much controversy about the U.S. decision to suddenly replace goalkeepers in the semifinals. Perhaps a better question is why the U.S., down a player and down two goals, made two DEFENSIVE substitutions? That, like, makes no sense. Add in the fact that Brazil has run wild since those substitutions and those changes seem doubly strange.

Listening to the commentary it seems like many observers were asking the question, "Can Brazil beat the United States?". Watching the game, Brazil looks SO MUCH better–faster, more skilled, and playing with ten times the energy–that I’m surprised that that was ever in doubt. Which makes me wonder, how bad a game did we play? Is this an aberration, or is Brazil really that good?

Marta is certainly that good. Some of the moves she made tonight were Zidanesque. The move she made to score the final goal of the game reminded me of something Bergkamp did a few years back–back to the defender, chip the through ball over the defender’s off-shoulder and cut in the other direction to beat her to the ball.

Wow, does Hope Solo (the U.S. keeper who was benched out of the blue) look pissed. Not hard to imagine why.

UPDATE: I just saw the "foul" that got the U.S. player sent off. The phrase "frickin’ joke" doesn’t even begin to describe it. Of course, the score was already 2-0 at that point, but still. It’s hard to foul someone when you’re AHEAD OF THE OTHER PLAYER and you’re both running down the field. Appalling.

The own goal that gave Brazil the 1-0 lead…ouch. Painful to watch.

The US pretty much gave up after the ref called that 2nd yellow on Boxx. Complete joke indeed. There was no chance of the US coming back after that, especially not with the way Brazil was playing.

    1st goal–stupid mistake
    2nd goal–should have been saved
3rd–US had given up by this point
4th–Unbelievable goal, made the US look silly.

But, when your team is ranked number 1 in the world and you thoroughly destroyed England, why change the lineup? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
