Still Learning, Not There Yet

Went to a picnic yesterday, played volleyball, ate traditional German food (chili, pasta salad, kielbasa) and pestered everyone with my new camera. I warned you I’d turn into a pretentious pain-in-the-ass with this thing, and I’m keeping my word. Although it’ll be nice once I figure out how to use it a bit better. There was a pretty cool sunset last night and I wasn’t able to get a picture showing how spectacular it was. But this should give you a bit of an idea:

The sky was really that color, it was something to see. And you’d be seeing it too if I could manipulate the doggone gizmo better.

Congrats are in order for 18-year-old Annette Obrestad, who won the Main Event of the World Series of Poker-Europe. She’s already known as an online tournament superstar–think this might increase her profile a wee bit? Wonder if she’ll be playing in Aruba this year? She did last year, and I remember wondering who the hell was this girl sitting with a big pile of chips. And when I say "girl" I’m not being a sexist pig–she was 17 and looked like she belonged in junior high. She also looked like she belonged at a poker table. I was, instinctively, afraid of her. At least in that setting. Fight or flight, I usually choose the latter.

Congratulations are also in order for my parents, who celebrated their 40th anniversary today. I realized a bit ago that they were getting close to the big 4-0, as I’m getting dangerously close to the big 4-0 myself. And as Mom was always fond of pointing out to me (and even to strangers we passed on the street) "You may be an idiot, but at least you’re not a bastard!", it should’ve occured to me sooner that this anniversary was a big one.

I kid, by the way. Mom never said anything like that. About me being an idiot, I mean. Or about being a bastard. I think I’m confusing the issue instead of clarifying–today is their 40th anniversary, I’m 38, you can do the math. They’ll be grandparents in a month or so and I think that blessed event will push me off their radar once and for all. I had a good run.

Ah, those Pittsburgh sunsets, they were always something wonderful to see. Great photo, even if it isn’t up to your own standards.

Annette scares me too. She kind of looks like Linda Blair in the Exorcist when she purses her lips during particularly intense hands.

I do believe she’ll be in Aruba… she mentioned that on one of the PokerNews videos as her next destination. Will you be joining her?
