Elvis Costello AND Bob Dylan?

Holy crap, I just learned from the P-G (after properly shielding my eyes from that disaster of a website) that Elvis Costello AND Bob Dylan will be playing in Pittsburgh on October 11th. I know most folks would reverse the order and say Dylan and Costello (as the P-G did) but I’m a big, big Elvis fan. And while I’m not the biggest concert-goer, this I gotta see. Costello is appearing solo, and while I’d rather see him backed by Imposters and/or Attractions (one could dream) it’s still a must-see. Pittsburgh doesn’t always get the biggest shows, so this is news for us.

Tickets goes on sale on September 8th. Hey, will I be in town on the October 11th? Checking the calendar…yes, I’ll be back from Aruba by then. Have I mentioned that I’ll be down there covering the Aruba Poker Classic from September 29th to October 7th? If you’re also going to be down there let me know, you lucky dogs you.

I’ve only seen Elvis Costello in concert once, that was about 4 years ago at the Palumbo Center with the Imposters backing him up. Incredible show, the highlight of which was his downright scary rendition of "I Want You". Wonder if he sang that to Diana Krall when he was wooing her. Maybe.

Oh, and I’m sure Bob Dylan is quite good, too. Hey, have you heard about the new biopic about Dylan coming out? Mr. Zimmerman is played by…Cate Blanchett. Check out the trailer, it’s…interesting.

There’s a very logical reason why both these performers are coming to Pittsburgh at the same time: I will be out of town. Great shows come here when I’m unable to attend. (See also: The White Stripes in 2003.)

I was at that Elvis Costello show at the AJ Palumbo Center too — was better than I’d expected (feared). I’ve seen Dylan only once, when he toured in the late 80s with Tom Petty. the show as a whole was good, but I was underwhelmed by Dylan. Still and all though, he’s a musical god.
