Techies Rally ‘Round!

Once again I need help from the computer savants among my readership. And without your help there may be no readership in the future. My ancient laptop is again causing me much grief. The last two days I couldn’t get on the Internet because it said it could not detect a dial tone. I plugged in the phone and I sure as shootin’ heard a dial tone. I took my PC card out to see if it was melted or something, but when I slid it back in the slot my computer no longer detects it. I restarted, I ran the troubleshooting wizard, I even threatened it–nothing. Can anyone give me any guidance beyond, “Dude, time to throw that computer AWAY”.
Some actual live poker to write about, if I ever get my computer up and running again. I will simply wait for the sage advice to come a-rollin’ in.

Sorry man! That sucks…I just had to throw a comment in about the “Some actual live poker to write about,” comment. Too bad nobody took me when I asked how long it would take you to get back to playing. 😉

Geno- Radio Shack called. They want the laptop back. Exchange for a new Tandy! Fer creepin sakes, pony up and throw that junk in the lake. Get a Dell, Sony or HP. No more Gateways.

Dude, time to throw that computer away!
Seriously, if your laptop computer uses a modem card (circa 1997) to reach the Internet, it’s time to invest a little money and join the 21st century.

before you throw the laptop away, you might want to check to see if the problem is from the card itself. perhaps you could borrow another card from a friend/neighbor and see if that works.

If you have a “friend”.. err.. I mean if you have a friend with a modem card ask to borrow it for a day. Plug it in and make sure it is not your slot. If you can also try and plug your card into his/her machine. If it is not then go on Ebay or somewhere and try and find a cheap modem card.

Hell, dude, I’ll mail you this ancient Xircom 56K+Ethernet card. It’s a type 2, so it takes up two slots. Email your address if that works for you.
