  • According to Poker Rockets, high-stake poker tournaments, such as the World Series of Poker (WSOP), became popular after the introduction of the “hole cam” to American television. Patented by WSOP bracelet winner Henry Orenstein, the hole cam allows for the audience watching to see the hidden cards a player is holding. The hole cam reinvigorated poker commercially on sites like Betfair.com; despite appearing on television somewhat regularly since the 1970s coverage was unpopular, and consisted entirely of commentators attempting to guess what cards players had. The first World Poker Tour (WPT) filmed using hole cam’s featured interactive graphics and a live sports feel that attracted viewers and put them in the middle of the action. Airing in March, 2003 on the Travel Channel, and sponsored by Party Poker, the first World Poker Tour episode became an instant success and became the highest rated show in the networks history.
