Ready, Steady, Whoa

When I got back from Argentina I gave myself a day to decompress and settle back into the nice rut I’ve grooved for myself. Picked up the cat, did a little grocery shopping, even went to the gym. It wasn’t until I did laundry a few days later that I discovered that I wasn’t fully in a Pittsburgh state ‘o mind. I washed the stuff I wore in Argentina, ironed it, folded it. and established some neat itemized piles. Went to my closet and pulled out a few shirts and a pair of jeans and then  tried on the sport coat I bought in Vietnam last year. Brought them out to the living room and added them to the piles.

So I had these piles of clothes, sitting in my living room. “OK, now what?” I said to myself. I grabbed my camera bag and started rooting around for the lenses I hadn’t taken to Argentina, deciding if I needed both for Vegas. Then, should I take my tripod? I took it to Aruba and barely used it, but I could take some nice night shots of the Strip and the Rio, do some time-lapse stuff…

That’s when I realized what I was doing–I was packing for the World Series. Which, at the time, was more than a month away. I took a step back, to my kitchen, and got myself a cold one. “Easy, Geno. You’ve got a little bit of  time here.”

This will be my third year at the WSOP, and now that I’m an old hand I’m looking at that seven-week desert deathmarch with a smidgen of dread. But I’m also excited, more excited than I was before my first trip out there. For this round-up it looks like I won’t be part of PokerNews‘ live-update team, I’ll be 100% focused on the UB Blog and that should give me the chance to do some longer pieces, more interviews and features and whatnot. And also take lots and lots and lots of photos. To that end I upgraded to the Canon’s new Rebel T1i, which I think will give me much better low-light performance than my trusty XTi. Plus it shoots hi-def video, which may or may not come in handy. I’ve also been spending a ton of time giving myself a crash-course in Lightroom 2, in the hopes that I can make some kickass images while I’m in Vegas.

My photography cramming is one reason why I haven’t been posting much here; another is just the usual laziness and not knowing what the hell to write about. Come the WSOP I plan on posting a lot here on my own site, especially as my lack of content the last two Series really bothered me.

Less than three weeks till I leave for Vegas. Two months away from home, two months broiling in the Vegas summer heat, two months away from the oasis of my beach volleyball league. Still can’t wait to go.
