So the bums who were the object of the raids that I DID read about were charging as high as 51% on debts? Who do they think they are, a credit card company? Free trade is all well and good if it ships my job to a panting Hindu, one bowl of rice away from suicide, but I can’t chuck my stack on red twos to a laughing trapper in Arctic Village.

I’ve always thought that UIGEA was bought by brick-and-mortar casino owners. If your business model gets threatened, outlaw the competition. Maybe not. But I’d really be surprised if Senator Kyl’s “Down with Demon Rum” rhetoric is anything more than posturing.

I agree with everyone you’ve said, Gene, except in part with the last. Apparently, Kyl is completely unfamiliar with Baxter-v.-United States, which held that playing poker is a skillful occupation and should therefore be taxed as earned, rather than gambling, income.

I think we should all call Kyl’s office, remind him of that decision, and ask him when he’s going to support online poker now that he’s aware that poker is already a skilled occupation.

It’s not the ignorance of not knowing poker, it’s the ignorance of believing people will accept what he says at face value.

Great post. And, in fact, the courts have ALREADY determined that poker is a skill game (Billy Baxter vs. US), which is why poker winnings are taxed by the government as regular income. It’s ignorant for a Senator not to acknowledge this.
